Preface: The "Deer Hunter's Field Guide: Pursuing Michigan's Whitetail" is intended to provided the Michigan sportsman with the latest, most comprehensive information on the white deer. Further, I have attempted to do this in a manner both entertaining and readable. Many facets of deer hunting, readily found in great detail in other books on the subject, are treated only briefly. Instead, this book is designed to focus on those aspects of the sport which are traditionally glossed over. I comprehensively discuss the whitetail's biology to meet the hunter's needs, and make it very specific to our state. The facts about the rut, for example, would not be the same about deer in the deep south where the breeding season is much longer. I have drawn from the latest available research - many of the facts discussed here were not fully understood or even known as recently as five years ago. Chapter 2 deals with the issue of management as it has evolved in Michigan, and should give you some insight to where we are today. In Section III, I have covered in detail such subjects as how to select a stand - what factors you should consider (and why), when you should sit in certain locations, and when not to. I also giver considerable attention to how one should hunt under a variety of weather conditions. In Chapter 10, I explain not only the importance of pre-season scouting, but, more importantly, just how it should be done. I then take the reader one step further and explain the most powerful tool you can use in scouting, "The Hunting Habit Map." Addressing the specialized needs of the Michigan hunter, I go into great detail delineating hunting techniques and strategies which will be most productive for each region of our state, be it the farmlands, the more rural areas, or the true wilderness regions of the Upper Peninsula.
